We are already changing the way we teach. Go to a classroom and you will see many students sitting at a desk looking at a computer as they do the work and the teacher is not really teaching but roaming around the room to assist if they have any questions. This is what we are paying teachers for now? We can do the same thing at home and the kids can spend better quality time at home in a safe place away from other kids who want to disrupt the learning process.

Computers Replaced Teachers Should

KN, I know, I see it in my girls sixth grade classroom. But it's not the teaching I'm concerned with, its the social interaction that school provides. And I know the reply is the kids will interact when they go out to play… but they don't do that any more. And we have parents now who don't make their kids do that. If we do this we will be stunting a whole generation of children socially.

I understand where you are coming from and many kids no longer go outside now to socialize and when they are at school the do not really socialize. They all sit at a table and pull out their phones and tablets and get on social media and talk to their so called 'friends' there while sitting by others who they really do not talk to or even know they are there half the time. When they get home they sit in their rooms and do the same thing. Those little screen take all their time and they are very much less social now than they ever were so I do not see what a computer at home will do to harm the social aspect than it already has been.

KN, at least at my daughter's school they don't do that. The teacher's actually teach for a good portion of the day, although not like what you and I remember. They also interact socially with each other. And these are the most important years to do this. I can definitely see them instituting something like computer assisted home teaching in high school. I can maybe see them doing it in middle school. But I think elementary school should be kept just the way it is and social interaction among children should be mandated, just like at my daughter's school. These are the most formative years regarding social interaction and with that we'll be doing a grave disservice to our children.

With less funding going to our public school and rising cost of teachers schools are looking at ways to cut back on expenses. Instituting some new type of program will cost them money that many of then just do not have. Granted it could help a lot of students socialize more but many of the students are more concerned about their status on social media. I have a feeling that our social skills are going down hill fast and it is because of the computers that are hand help and helping teach out children. I think that many teachers will be obsolete in ten years.

KN,

It wouldn't be a new program, it would simply be continuing to fund elementary schools and the teachers that requires when/if middle school and/or high school ever gets to the point where teachers are replaced by computers. There would still be a tremendous savings in money and our kids would still learn from humans and be required to socialize in their key formative years.

We can hope that they do this but I have a feeling that teachers are looking for a easy way to not teach and the kids coming out of college now feel they should not have to work hard thus it is going to end up that during elementary school the kids will be less and less socialized over the next decade and teachers will be replaced with computers. I do not like this trend but it is already happening.
