Comments: Typical of a lazy, uncreative and helpless government. Choose the easy way out to increase revenue. Trinidad and Tobago- one he 'bread basket' of the Caribbean is now the 'empty calabash' of the region. Why? Because of government's (Past and present's) inability to see beyond tomorrow and are only interested in the present. I think that NO ONE should pay property taxes- until the government can ensure a steady water supply, electricity, safety and security for us, a better health and education system. Trinidad currently has sufficient revenue to meet its financial obligations. Cut the waste within government, reduce MPs wages, reduce the corruption. Revive agricultural programmes in earnest.
Comments: Mr Aston is correct in what he has said. I would image that he has also forwarded his comments to the local press. However he would be extremely lucky to see his comments published in any newspaper here as it is most likely to make local citizens think twice as to why they are paying property taxes, and cause bitter resentment..and protest. In my opinion the whole idea of this tax was cause by the shortage of funds in the Treasury. The long and short of it is that citizens here have made their be now they must lie on it.The ball is now in their court. They should not be at all surprise if they are not ask to cough up more money for some other scheme the government may introduce down the line.
Increase Of Property Tax Caribbean / Tobago & Trinidad
Title: Property taxes
Comments: Now that collection of property taxes has been halted by a local court.T wonder what the government will do with the money if they win their appeal and continue to collect these taxes. Are we going to see an improvement in the supply of basic amenities, such as better roads, street lightening and regular supplies of good drinking water and more policemen in those outlying districts which are now becoming hot spots of crime?. After all this is why citizens pay property taxes. Local councils should publish a yearly account showing the breakdown of how this tax is utilized within their districts. This should then provide more accountability and transparency and thus prevent any misuse of these taxes.
