Wasting food ought to be considered blasphemy. Farmers work hard to grow the food. Parents and individual work hard to buy and cook food. Americans and civilians around the world are starving. Yet, America wastes about 40% our food resources. Food waste is shameful.
Over weight Americans should take responsibility for their lives. Obesity and chronic diseases like: hypertension, heart disease, diabetes are preventable diseases based on life style. But these conditions cost tax payers billions of dollars, due to unpaid emergency services bills.
Obesity is more than consuming large amounts of food. It's nutritious food versus junk/fast food. Healthy foods are more expensive and time consuming than fast or prepackaged foods. If you look at obesity statistics, often poor neighborhoods are more overweight/obese than wealthy neighborhoods.
Very true there, darkmb101, people do work hard to make those people, not also that, fat people should be ashamed because they are eating way more than they need to eat! That can cause serious heart problems if fat people continue this.
Fat people should be ashame but not more than anybody else: fat and slim, american or not. Being overweight is not to be blamed, everybody is free to do whatever he wants with his life. I'm slim but I'm a smoker. Buying cigarettes everyday I waste money as much as an obese person does for food. Am I ashame? yes, but it will not stop me from buying my cigarettes again tomorrow. People is starving around the world not because of some americans eating too much. The reasons are much more complex.
The $1 menu has to be the worst thing ever right behind the all you can eat concept. Mix this with a tradition of sugary cereal and couch potato snacks and the things all Americans need to be ashamed of is following what everyone else does.
I am American(North America, of course)
I am obese
I am not ashamed of that fact, but I have been shamed for it since I started Pre-School.
I am a Third Generation Italian American, some of my family originates from Florence Italy, and some from Palermo, Sicily. I also have some from Germany, Ireland, and Scotland, but I type this just to give my ancestry a bit.
I come from a long line of large family members. I was born large, and have never been considered remotely thin. My family, when it got together for events and holidays, ate as well as any Italian family. Every other day of my life though, my family ate with health in mind, plenty of fruits and vegetables. We even had vast gardens of vegetables and fruit trees to feast on. The first time I ever ate at a fast food restaurant I was already a teenager.
I am not obese from excess, but my whole life others have made me feel like I was some kind of criminal for being "Fat". Even as an adult at 37, I get snide remarks and unkind words. Even though, I've been in sports and other things like Track, Gymnastics, Volleyball, and Football. I have been able to do things a lot of thin people I've known can't, like I can do the splits like Jean Claude VanDamme, I've climbed Half Dome in Yosemite Park, I've hiked many mountains in the U.S(We have a bunch in California). I exercise and eat as healthy as I can, yet I am still Obese.
With this in mind, I come to this website and see this thread about, "Fat Americans should be ashamed" started by an alias named GOSSIP. How dare you. Are there not fat people in other nations?!? Is it the fact we should be ashamed because we are Americans? By golly, this sure does sound like a form of harassment and bigotry, all started by someone who can't even post under their own name.
This has angered and saddened me, but I am trying to make a calm and worth while response to this thread. Shall I also state that I am a Pre-Op Male to Female Transgender Woman to give you more to try to knock me down with? Try to think of something new, I've most likely heard it all before.
I will end with this. I understand many things in life, like "One bad apple spoils the bunch", "To err is human, to forgive Divine". I also understand to "Never judge a book by it's cover". The Axis Powers were the worlds enemies during World War 2, but we do not hate every German, Japanese, or Italian, do we?
Why does it seem everyone hates fat people?
Why does it seem I am hated just because I am American?
Why does this world keep perpetuating an aura of hate?

Bunny, I think the original intent of the poster was asking if obese people (at least, those that are overweight because of excessive food consumption) should be ashamed thinking about the food emergency in poor countries. Which, I agree with you, is a nonsense. I believe he mentioned the Us only because he may be an american himself (like most of the people here). I didn't see it as an attack against your Country. Happy to find somebody that comes from my same nation, anyway.
I am at a loss for words at the moment. I'd like to be constructive, but I'm second guessing myself on my writings because the title has offended me.
At first, I think it would of been better without the word "Americans" in it, but then it would still be titled something like, "Fat people should be ashamed". Maybe if it was changed to a query, "Should fat people be ashamed?" This way it is a question up for discussion, and not someones repugnant statement of prejudice.
I agree with you on this point. The way it is, sounds like a statement and I didn't like it either the first time I saw it (as you can see from my old reply). I didn't pay any attention to the word 'Americans' mainly because it appears often in topic's titles here. Most of the members are from the US and, sometimes, the discussion becomes America-centered. Don't get offense: is better having some fat in the body than sawdust in the brain...
