The bunkers that are left are from the 50s and 60s and probably in such a state of disrepair that they are useless. In truth, the best chance everyone has is to monitor the news and leave the cities and likely target areas if war looks imminent… and by war I mean a nuclear war with either China or Russia. And really, Russia is the main one… they are the country with the most warheads. China is far behind us and Russia.

Of course, there is little you can do in the event of a sneak attack other than seek what shelter you can find and wait out the first few weeks. Hopefully you are provisioned for that. Then, find a place as far from any blasts as possible with weather patterns that keep the majority of the radiation away. Here's the rub, there are going to gangs of people trying to take what you have. You'll have to be able to fight them off.

The most major objective to survival is to be able to protect yourself and those with you from criminals and scavengers who will be out in full force to take what they can for survival too. Yes, strongest, smartest, and most prepared. I could be wrong on this but I don't think the nuclear winter will be as severe as people think. It'll last a year and mess up crops, but it'll dissipate quickly. The problem is that what dissipates will be radioactive too. Cancer is going to be a big factor afterwards. The nuclear winter won't matter as much since there'll be food for what's left of the world's population. Of course, the countries hardest hit will suffer the most.
