I think In situations like this you should always let someone know where you are going and when you plan on returning. That way the search can get started quicker and they will have a general idea of where you are.

Desert Survival History & Civil Business Politics

Well it is a good idea to let people know where you are going and when you are coming back in any situation unless of course you do not want to be found. I think however in a desert environment it is doubly important because to issue with the lack of water and possibly food.
