I see part of what you mean, but I think education is broader than that.  And if the people are being pigeonholed into narrow fields of study and are not being exposed to the width and breadth of just using your mind, then I submit that education is not taking place.

Its interesting that you would pick IT as the field for your example.  IT is the great leveler of the playing field.  Yes it is easy to go somewhere and apply for a job, but with IT skills, one's ability to create ways to make money is tremendous.  From repairing to networking to creating web pages to doing powerpoint presentations to making games and programming and on and on and on.

Exposure to the best and brightest sets the table for those types of possibilities.

Look at my profile. Also there was a recent survey done in Trinidad, this country rates the lowest in the world for IT performance.
