WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, the court's oldest member and leader of its liberal bloc, says he is retiring when the court finishes its work this summer. The move gives President Obama his second high court opening to fill. His announcement had been hinted at for months. It comes 11 days before his 90th birthday. Ref. USAToday

Stevens Paul John

John Paul Stevens, the second oldest and third longest-serving Supreme Court justice in history, dies at 99, Stevens, a Republican president's nominee who went on to lead the court's liberal wing, died on Tuesday. President Gerald Ford nominated him to the court in 1975 and he went on to serve for 35 years before retiring in 2010. Ref. USAToday.
