No More UPC Bar Codes

I was wondering for a brief moment if to add this to the religion board because many religious groups believed that the bar code had a relation to the mark of the beast. However they also believed that technology would get to the stage where people would be implanted with their 'info', maybe similar to this...

GOODBYE UPC BAR CODES

Razor blades and medicines packaged with pinpoint-sized computer chips and
tiny antennae to send retailers and manufacturers a wealth of information
about the products -- and those who buy them -- will start appearing in
grocery stores and pharmacies this year.

I am all for these companies that want to keep track of their products.  But as long as it is only logged with the stores or manufacturers.  But I see one big downside.  With alot of this new technology, it can be used against someone in one form or another.  I mean, someone could use it for other reasons and hack into the frequency to it.  For instance, couldn't a stalker start using these little id chips to keep track of the people they are stalking, and the victim having no knowledge of how or why?  Or for government agencies to secretly keep track of certain types of people?

That is a good point, everything invented with a good purpose in mind always ends up for a bad as well. I should mention thought that technology was already around a long time ado for people to track you in that way. They could stick it on you while passing by, etc.

I must point out that it is currently 2006 and I have yet to see this in use on any large scales that I am aware of. This technology does give me a thought to a truly "quick checkout" at the local store. If every item that you intend to purchase is currently in your cart and there is a scanner of sorts that you must pass through at the checkout line then you could literally bag your items as you go or stick them in your pocket. This would actually enable you to merely walk though the scanning device and have your entire load of merchandise added to your ticket. This would do a lot to prevent long lines at high traffic times. I am not exactly sure how close the technology would actually be to accomplish this but I like the idea. It could also put an easy end to much of the "I forgot I put it in my pocket" shop lifting as you also walk through the scanner area.
