How Strictly to Obey the Sabbath? - Page 4

Name: Ryan

Comments: D&C 59 puts it into perspective for me. It also lists the blessings received from devoting the day to the Lord. Just like everything else, the spirit will let you know what is and isn't OK. Personally, I get a bad feeling when I think about doing house hold chores on Sunday but if my wife gets a migraine and we don't have any medicine then I won't think twice about going to the store. With that, if my wife asks me to do a load of laundry because she didn't get to it you can bet I'd be doing laundry! But instead of just doing laundry I'd have my boys help me and talk to them about what they learned in primary that day or even just spend time with them that I might not get during the week. The spirit won't be leaving my home during that chore.

I was on my way home from my father-in-law's house where he had just surprised me with a boat. Sunday was the day we chose to travel home. An hour from arriving home a tire came off the boat trailer and I was in a world of hurt. A family stopped by to see if we needed help and it turned out that they were friends with the man who owned the local tire shop and they repaired the wheels and tires on my trailer over the following week. The family that stopped later told us that normally they wouldn't have stopped but they felt guilty about breaking the Sabbath. I will be forever grateful for their sin. biggrin.gif Was it OK for them to go to McDonalds that day? Was it OK for me to be travelling home from my in-law's with my family that day? It's a spiritual experience that I won't forget.

Having said all of that, if you have to ask it's probably not a good idea. According to D&C 59, if you can refrain from murder, treat your neighbour with love and keep the Sabbath, you can pretty much have whatever you want both temporally and spiritually. My rule is, if I can't feel the spirit, I shouldn't be doing it on Sunday. Now, to practice what I preach....
