The Family and Judgement

If most people understood the following quote the world would be a much better place:

"When we stand before the bar of God, there will be little mention of how
much wealth we accumulated in life or of any honors which we may have
achieved.  But there will be searching questions concerning our domestic
relations."

(Gordon B. Hinckley, “Personal Worthiness to Exercise the Priesthood,”
Ensign, May 2002, 54)

What are your thoughts? How many members do you see who neglect their families, but have lots of wealth, land, great jobs, and/or education?

Great quote!

I just read the parable of the rich man and Lazaruz, it refers to a rich man who had it all and a beggar who had nothing.
When they died the beggar was received into heaven and was comforted and the rich man was tormented in hell.

If anything a greater accountability rests upon those with riches and honors etc, the Lord will judge by the opportunities we have had in this life.
I suppose it is like the parable of the talents, those who have been given many talents are expected to produce many more.
Where on the other hand those who have been given one or two talents are required to produce another one or two.
If someone who has been blessed in this life with wealth and opportunities neglects those things which are expected of them then they are going to recieve a greater condemnation than someone who has no opportunities.

Yes, but I believe, most of them look at it the other way around... they see the poor as an obstacle, as lazy or not as good so they put themselves aloof, whereas because of their riches they can be a tool in the hands of God to help these same people they think are less than themselves.
If someone who has been blessed in this life with wealth and opportunities neglects those things which are expected of them then they are going to recieve a greater condemnation than someone who has no opportunities.
Yes, and more than the physical, the family itself is neglected, afterall there are those who are rich and educated, but their families are in ruin... if you speak with them seriously you will discover that they would give up all their riches to have a good home to come to.

Great thoughts Belle!. I have in my profile a quote that I found that says 'Fortune doesn't change men it unmasks them". I'm not saying that rich people are evil and poor people are godly....but has to do with their hearts, how humble and soft they're.
But going back to the subject, yes that's a great quote by Pres. Hinckley and yes there are lots of members of the Church who are very active, who fulfill their callings and preach but the families are being neglected by them. This is very sad. I remember in Doctrine and Covenants when Heavenly Father told the Prophet Joseph Smith and other brethren to 'see about their families first'. I like to do this test when I teach in the Church or in Visiting Teaching. Make a inverted pyramid and put these things next to it: God, Job, Family, Church and ask the members to put what is first, of course most of them put God but always in the second they put 'Church' instead of 'Family'.
