Mormons & Borderline Personality Disorder - Page 2

Greetings; and howdy! Many of the symptoms for hypo-thyroidism, and also for hyper-thyroidism are the same for bipolar disorder. The reason that I am responding to this post is because J. B. Asked me to, and also because persons who have bipolar frequently react to their environment and loved ones in a manner which is not within the realm of the reality of a "Potentially" healthy, happy environment, family and friends. My first wife has bipolar disorder. She was not diagnosed during the eight years in which she and I were legally and lawfully married. My disclosures of courtesy have become very economic, regarding these facts. This is the (Brief) story: My first wife was undiagnosed in having bipolar disorder, but, yet, I stayed with her for eight years. There were a number of my spiritual leaders, bishops and members of stake presidencies, who suggested that I obtain a divorce, but I always explained to them that I needed to press forward in the problems of my marital relationship on my own recognizance with my Father in heaven. Finally, in explaining to me that if she wanted to be married in her life, she would most certainly want to be married to me, but, in her life, she did not want to be married anymore. Even though the decision was "Black and white" for me, it was very difficult for me to go through. All my spiritual leaders told me to keep the temple sealing as it is - "Don't touch it". Also, since that time, she has had no romantic interest in anyone, and does not date. Certainly, she is of a minority of women, in this regard of romantic relations. Also, since that time, there is no "War" going on, which is very good for our two sons, and for me, and for her, and also for my second wife, and all of the siblings of my first wife and her parents, with whom I am still in contact and correspondence, except for one, who is a ling distance away. (Perhaps I should take an initiative, especially since she is an inactive member. Non of her other siblins, or her parents are members, yet.) In fact, when my second wife and I returned to the east, from our lengthy honeymoon and also two-year stay in Utah, we stayed in my first wife's apartment for ten days, as a transitional pillow off the nations highways. Also, in the twelve years since, she has frequently brought them up to us, and the three of them have slept over in our own apartment, and we have always very frequently gotten together during birthdays and holidays, either with her family, of with mine. Also, I frequently visit them on weekends. And so, everyone's situation is different - - that is for sure. *** Since she has been diagnosed, she has been able to, therefore, be treated, and she has held down a job(s) / two, and purchased a home, with the help of county/state funding and financing. * This concludes, for the most part (Unless you had any questions) my economic "Disclosure of courtesy". My second wife and I were also sealed in an L. D. S. Temple.

Now, some viewpoint about how difficult it was to push the silly papers through the court system, which was at the time of my keeping a separate household from my first wife: This legal process was through a court in the Dominican Republic, and through a lawyer in Iowa, who I found in a weekly tabloid. I had to wait only three weeks for the process. I called the state attorney's office three times, in order to confirm that this was accepted to be legal in this state. The lawyer told me that he was involved with this sort of thing because he had realized how difficult it was for persons to have to wait for long, extended periods before they could even file for a divorce, because of state laws: if they filed in the state where they lived. He did not think that this was promoting the ease of transition for so many persons in the predicament of getting a divorce and trying to remain conscientious ethically and morally, even though there were a separation. * As for myself, I had become so sickly, in my needs and efforts to build a good, healthy relationship with my mysteriously ill wife, that it was a consideration to depart myself from her "For the sake of the kingdom of heaven". However, being so unhappy in her undiagnosed state, she "Beat me to the punch", and explained to me about her dilemna of being married in her life, while she was as sick as she was. * About a year later, she was finally diagnosed: and treated. *** >>> Some items of which I had learned, while with my first wife, were, simply, that if anyone so close to me; about whose welfare I cared about so much, and with whom I sought after a good, healthy, vibrant relationship, every day: were to say or do things which were not directly supportive of my daily efforts of marital hapiness, I would not respond to those remarks, or actions as if they were relevant to the way things really are, or as if they were any real commentary on how I thought, what I did, or how much I cared. Bipolar causes such responses to be just that: irrelevant responses to anything real, in environment, relationship, or other's personality. Bipolar, also, is the perpetuator of unpredictable mood swings. >>> It is therefore, a very great thing which I learned. I translate this ability, to be quietly tolerant of such intolerable things, as an "Extra ten ponds of steam for carefreedom".

Expanding upon these themes, or answering any questions, are perfectly alright with me. Obviously, I do have lots of empathy toward individuals who have troubles of this kind, seeing that I am so given to offering such lengthy transcripts of personal offerings. All the best to you. May you find all solution, and success in any problem-solving, in your marriage. Now, I have been successfully and happily married to my second wife, "Legally and lawfully", for twelve years. Also, we both have, and have had notable callings in the church, which the church leaders have seen fit to bestow upon us. I make this disclosure simply because my of desire to relate to you that life is what it should be, as members of the church, for both myself and my second wife. It is that I desire my first wife to become active in the church much more than she has been. Both of my sons bear the Aaronic Priesthood, and they pretty much look afetr the welfare of their mother.

To sleeplessinsalem - Howdy. All of the symptoms named by LDS_forever, about BPD, are apparent with my first wife, including the potential unpredictable behavior; such as certain (infrequent) shopping choices. Whenever I see something about BPD, hypo- or hyper-thyroidism, I take note in that these are very similar or identical in symptom to bipolar. >>> Another item, I may relate to you, in these considerations of complexing challenge, is that my first wife definitely needed professional help. So, finally, she got it. And she takes 100 mg of lithium every day. Our sons look into her welfare, to check if she has been taking her medication. Two years ago, and four, and five, these three (infrequent) times, she had (naturally) decided to do without her meds, and lo, and behold, she then found that she had to be staying in the psychiatrical clinic (near here she lives) for a week, three days, and two weeks. She realizes, now, that she really must stay on the meds. *** "Professionals", in many areas of studied expertise, have studied their secular fields so that they may perform a specific function of their chosen profession. * Therefore, since your wife has BPD, I certainly hope that she has done/would do the responsible thing for herself, and for her family, for her to see professional guidance, counselling and medication specifically for BPD. > We have computers, and we use them to our advantage. We have cars, since, relatively, yesterday. And we also have the latest in surgery, such as the use of sound waves to cause cancer cells to self-destruct. (Of course, the U.S. Army also had 100,000-mile sets of auto tires in the 1950s, which ere shelved, and there were 100 mpg carbeurators since the 1960s, but that is another story - - perhaps for B. Gordon Liddy.) - We also have the cutting edge of psychiatric medicines.  * It is as simple as that. - raintreelds/Ted

We used to have an inside saying on my mission that goes something like... 'The Church seems to attract all the 'nut' jobs and that is why we are members too'. I am amazed by how many members suffer with this or similar problems. It is interesting to note that Ted go permission to remarry again based on this and still remain sealed to his first.

Comments: Hi my name is Peter I live in the UK and I have BPD. I am active in the church, I served a mission and am married with three children. Being a male with BPD is incredibly lonely and would love to talk with any other LDS men who suffer from BPD. That does not mean that I wouldn't welcome comments from women. I see a wonderful therapist from LDS family services here in the UK and I am the first male BPD sufferer they have dealt with. I look forward to hearing from.

Best Wishes to all who struggle each day with a mental illness and their wonderful loved ones whose love and support is so vital
