Trinidad & Tobago Genealogy - Page 2

Of course we should get a National Genealogical Research Library in Trinidad. I remember when I was little having to do research on my family tree so I know that the topic does come up from time to time. There are people from long-established families that have written books on their ancestry such as the Deverteuils and DeLimas. I've also known of folks doing research on their roots here and up-the-islands so hence my first statement to the affirmative.

This is what I know of Trinidad's long-established families thus far:

Spanish surnames from when we were a Spanish colony

Herrera, Diaz, Basanta, Farfan, Hernandez, Hospedales, Estrada, Salvary, Portel, Gonzales, Sorzano, Lezama.

The Farfans are people who moved here in 1644 from the South American continent and are our oldest family of European origin.

Herrera are perhaps Sephardic jewish decendandescendantslitary officer who served during the Chacon administration.

Salvary and Estradas owned land in Matelot.

Note that the Cadiz family came around this time but are descended from a Spanish-Irish family.

French Post-Capture

De Meillac, De Pompignan, Blanchard, Mouttet. Some are Martiniquan in origin. The Ganteaumes are post-cedula in origin.

Other Spanish, Venezuelans, Italians Post- British Capture

Lots of descendants of cocoa planters or cocoa panyoles such as Lara, Matamoro, Salsiedo, Sanchez, Salina, Castillo, Subero, Villafana?, Villaruel?, Lopez and many who live up in Arima, Lopinot, Santa Cruz, Maraval. These are the people who promoted parang.
