What is the deal with having a Cel phone in Trinidad? I see people who could hardly pay their regular phone bill going out to get a cel. The funniest is to see people using the cel like a regular phone. They speak for long minutes (20 or more) while paying $0.80 per minute? That is crazy!

In Trini cells still cost more than regular phones? In the US many people are replacing their regular phones with just a cell. I have both because with my son still living at home we need a number we can both use, but if it were just me I would just use my cell. My cell includes free incoming and free long distance.

In time, you may find this happening in Trini as well as more people get them.

Many have them, and then do not pay their home phone bill smile.gif-->rolleyes.gif However, if one is to use their cell phone to just receive calls then it can be cost effective. The whole problem is that there is a monopoly here with the phone company. Imagine, there is no unlimited time unless you are in a 10 minute radius for local calls via a regular phone and no free time between cells owned by the same person like Xingular provides.

That is much how it used to be here. Now, it has been changed. Much of it through deregulation and much just through competition with cell phones. The home service is still not much of a bargain, but cell plans have really become competive. So, maybe as cell phones become more popular, you will see something similar happen there.

When they don't pay their local home phone service, does the service get terminated?

Of course, like anywhere else.

Its not a matter of popularity, most everyone has one, like I said before, the phone company here is a monopoly. There is only one, therefore they are free to charge what they want and complaints do nothing. As an example: I pay US$55 a month for a slow dial-up connection!

Yes, the cell phones in the ads makes you waste a lot of money, especially when you find out the ad is bogus or a waste of time. maybe the newspapers should require a regular number too?
