Okay, so he is not an angel, I reached the same conclusion from my first post, but no one has answered... what is he? Is he just symbolic to show that we may be putting innocent people to death? Is he like the messiah who did nothing but help people and ended up being put to death for it? I also wonder why he is made to be so shy? Surely he could of explained and show the people who really assaulted the girls.

I couldn't figure it out either and I think it's Stephan King's "fault" for creating that mystique atmosphere.
