Comments: What makes for the best fishing bait? There are some people that swear by worms and others that think the fish itself is best.

It depends on what your fishing for. I could go on and on about different baits and techniques for all the various fish. If you could narrow down your question to the type of fish and location (river, lake, etc ..) I would be able to answer.

My personal favorites are catfish and game fish like bass and northern pike. For catfish I use a river rig with a sponge bait soaked in stink bait. Find a good spot in the current (trial and error are the only good tools here). Once you find that spot set your rod up and wait for the hit. Once you get a hit you usually need to wait for the 3rd or fourth strike, depending on the strength of the strike.

For bass and northern pike I like to use a frog lure. The frog lure looks like a frog and you have to use a steel leader (it is a bit of steel line attached to the lure). That way when they bite they don't break the line.

You cast the frog out towards the shore from a boat and make it appear like a real frog. Making it jump from lily pad to lily pad and or jerking it threw the water causing it to swim forth like a real frog. The fish will then fly up from the water, usually clearing it in its strike. It is then you set the hook, then try to reel it in while the fish tries to lodge itself under a log or in the weeds.
