Significance Of Dedicating Statues? - Page 2

international QUOTE (Ronan @ 8-Oct 09, 3:24 PM)
The 10 commandments were replaced when Christ was here by the higher laws.

Really? Wow when that happened? So we can go ahead and kill, commit adultery, have other gods, steal, etc?

international QUOTE
So if you are making statues and saying they are your God and are worshiping then that is wrong, but ifyou are not worshiping them, but seeing them as art, that's fine.

Where does it say that? You see my problem with many of these opinions is that it has no scriptural back up you know what am I saying? Now if you have proof of that I'm all ears thats not what the commandment is saying. Liahona's point is that that verse has two parts one about the creation of the statue and the other of the worshiping of it.

Yes you can when you take things out of context and not read the whole thing...as you seem to have done.

The whole new testament is about how Christ came to fulfill the law of Moses and introduce the higher law. Just look at any ordinance performed that only need the Aaronic priesthood (baptism & sacrament). It is always done word for word. All other ordinances that are performed under the Melchizedek priesthood are not as strict.

And there are plenty of scriptures to back it up.

Matthew 22: 35-40
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

John 1:17
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:24-25

24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Ronan you're going around but still not justifying your statement:

international QUOTE
The 10 commandments were replaced when Christ was here by the higher laws.

Thats false doctrine, period. Nothing wrong with admitting when one is wrong you know what am I saying? Maybe you tried to say something else? But that statement is false. If you well remember, Jesus met a rich young man who wanted to gain eternal life (Mark 10:17-25)

international QUOTE
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

18And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

19Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

22And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

23And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

24And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Did Jesus tell him...well I'm here now forget about the 10 commandments...no he reminded him of it actually. You're confusing the ten commandments with the Mosaic Law.

I got this from lds.org:

international QUOTE
The Ten Commandments are eternal gospel principles that are necessary for our exaltation. The Lord revealed them to Moses in ancient times (see Exodus 20:1-17), and they are also referenced in whole or in part in other books of scripture (see Matthew 19:18-19; Romans 13:9; Mosiah 12:33-36; 13:13-24; D&C 42:18-29; 59:5-13; 63:61-62). The Ten Commandments are a vital part of the gospel. Obedience to these commandments paves the way for obedience to other gospel principles.

Like I said maybe you meant something else but the statement still wrong.

Now before the mods tell me I'm going offtopic, the dedication of statues is truly an interesting topic I mean why would be the purpose of dedicating a statue of the angel Moroni or JS you know what am I saying? Or even create them? Hmmmm I need to do a lil more research on this. Thanks Liahona for bringing up this topic.

OK last point about this, you assume that I said replace as in get rid of the old, it can also mean update or even supersede. That's what gets a lot of people in trouble they take things too literal and don't leave room for interpretation via spirit of the law. If you love God and Love you fellow man, they encompass all the rest.

You even proved the point that that is what Jesus meant to the rich man. Telling him he has obeyed the letter of the law but not the spirit of it.

But feel free to interpret this as you wish...

Dear Brother Ronan how are you? I think most of us are aware of the definition of the word "replace" which means to substitute. There is no need for interpretation in that commandment my brother, hope you're not offended. As Latter Day Saints we know that following the commandments is a necessary step for our exaltation. I look forward to read more inputs about the need of dedicating statues since I find it fascinating.

Significance Of Dedicating Statues?

Thanks for the patronizing post. I was just explaining what I meant. It really makes me feel like I can express myself and not have to be an English major...

Hope you are not offended...

Probably its just as was said earlier, its not a dedication in the same way. A statue is just another form of art like a paiting it shouldn't be taken the same way the Catholics do with their statues.

Is the Angel Moroni a lightning rod? Statue does what it's built to do

The statue on a spire above almost all LDS temples is more than a symbol and a landmark. Ref. Source 7d.
