Global Climate Change - Page 12

Name: George

Comments: The human race is destroying itself at an alarming rate, and according to a well renowned scientist we have only 100 years left here on earth We need to find another planet to live on otherwise the human race will be extinct. Apparently the two main offenders which are destroying earth are oil and its product of plastic. Petrol and diesel expelled from the exhausts of vehicles are causing many respiratory diseases and this from of illness is growing at an alarming rate throughout the world, especially in congested towns and cities. There is now an alarming amount of plastic drifting in the oceans all over the world many in the form of bottles, other utensils and plastic granules which are also now found on many beaches even in uninhabited areas of the Pacific ocean. A large quantity of the plastic are broken down into minute bits which are absorb by fish, birds, and turtles. Many of these animals including whales die of starvation as they have absorb so much plastic that there is no room left in their stomachs to gather any ingredients of wholesome food. These affected animals soon die or if caught are in many cases entering the human food chain. It is now predicted that human being will start dying at a young age. It is perhaps too late to stop the what is likely to happen to the human race in the near future. Some countries have now embarked on regular clean up programs of plastic on their beaches and some have already introduced the pay back of deposits paid on buying products in plastic bottles. There is also new reports from the science world that even putting water in plastic bottles contaminates the water thereby effecting those drinking such water. We will just have to wait to see if some of the predicted misfortune of oil and plastic is damaging as reported by the scientists.

Well, we've heard it from the doomsayers in the past and it's all been a bunch of hogwash. My gut tells me it's hogwash this time too but my brain tells me to believe the reports and that the human race's years are numbered.

I feel that yes that our time here on this earth is numbered but that number is still in the three digits yet. We will have to really worry when it gets under 100 years if we have not already figured things out. One of the most damning things against us it the fact that if we have a global thermonuclear war. Otherwise some facts remain. Yes there is climate change occurring. Yes part of this is caused by man.

Yeah, and we may be able to technology our way out of this. We may also dig ourselves in deeper with some science/technology we don't understand. Mother Nature may also lend a hand and kill a third of us or so off, like she did with the plagues of centuries ago. Fewer people means the Earth has less stress and can sustain us for longer.

On the subject of global warming and the effect of our oil-based civilization, I recommend looking at the material from the permaculture community, especially David Holmgren and his "4 scenarios". Pretty interesting stuff.

I'm no science-guy, but many have confirmed the fact that the global warming is no joke, Wether or not it is entirely human-made or only partially is still open for debate (Especially amongst the neo-liberal community and the fossil-fuel specialists for obvious reasons..). Still, the fact that the US just back-pedaled on their ecological policies is more than a little preoccupying, in my opinion.

I agree that technology can help. But there are other alternatives, like working for an energy reduction while increasing community-based policies and alternative lifestyles (See "Permaculture" above, amongst other ideas).

Check this for interesting material: Source 5m.

Ash,

Good post. I think global warming is partially due to man and mostly due to natural warming trends and events currently beyond our control. Of course that means less than nothing since I am definitely not an expert in this area. But I do have an opinion and I've heard scientists scream about this and that in the past only to not see it come to pass or actually have it disproved.

Regarding the US pulling out of the treaty. Personally, I wish we didn't. I wish we got everyone bac to the table to negotiate a better treaty. In my opinion, there is that word again, that treaty is nothing but a job killing tax on the West in general and the US in particular while giving China, India, Brazil, Russia and a host of other countries a by on producing carbon emissions.

No here is the thing, the US and the West already have reduced their carbon emissions a tremendous amount and at a tremendous cost in dollars and euros and lost jobs. Why do I say that? Had the resources spent on that been spent on producing jobs the unemployment rate would be considerably lower. Now, I agree we needed to clean up our act, but we have. Now it's time for the of the BRIC countries to clean theirs. They are spewing a tremendous amount of crap into the air.

In my opinion, last time I promise, these countries are using these accords as a way to gain the upper hand on the US and the West regarding production and we are letting them. So, let's not let use these accords for that purpose, rather let's actually get a good deal on the table that reduces the carbon footprint of all countries involved.

A lot of the man made part of the global climate change has a lot of to with the use, production and extraction of fossil fuels. The internal combustion engine was obsolete back in the late 60s to early 70s but the big oil companies have suppressed a lot of technology. Why are we still using the same technology to move around that was invented back in the 1890's. The rest of our technology has not been stagnant so why is our use of fossil stagnant?

Agreed KN, that is the one thing we can do right now. We have the technology, it's just that the oil companies are in cahoots with the car companies to keep the technology hidden.
