This is unfortunate as it is very clear that the US was founded on its ability to domestically provide for its citizens through hard labor and technological advancements. I have no doubt that if forced to be, the US could be self sufficient and manufacture goods within its borders. To achieve this we need to start taxing foreign goods when they enter our borders, and give incentives to American industries. This will not only curb our appetite for foreign goods, but would boost the employment levels and give the country a sense of pride in providing for its own.

Foreign Made History & Civil Business Politics

At the same time foreign relations will go down the drain, but if the US felt it could live without that then so be it, but knowing the thinking up there it will never happen, the US sees more and more the necessity to be involved in other nation's business because it could mean trouble for them if they do not. Economically, exporting goods also creates more jobs and makes the rich men richer so if they shut down foreign trade they would also have to stop exporting.

It is not even a matter of stopping importation altogether, but heavily taxing foreign goods. No one in the US is going to tell the public they cant have a particular product; but they can control how much that product costs if it has been imported. I always hear other countries complaining about the US meddling in their business; you would think this kind of move would appease them.
