There are a number of things that can tell you if someone is lying or not:
- eye contact;
- too many small details- people that are lying are always giving more small details than average - it makes them think that by supplying many details it will make them more believable;
- their body language, their gestures
- the most important one is the face; there will be small indications (For a split second - twitches) on someone's face if they are lying.
Exposing liars by distraction. It is well documented that lying during interviews takes up more cognitive energy than telling the truth. A new study found that investigators who used this finding to their advantage by asking a suspect to carry out an additional, secondary, task while being questioned were more likely to expose lie tellers. The extra brain power needed to concentrate on a secondary task (Other than lying) was particularly challenging for lie tellers. Source 6i.
