How fast can you be on the move?

On The Run...

Think about your home and all the things within it. Now think of all the sentimental items that you have kept over the years, and then imagine that you suddenly have to leave your home because a storm or mob or other event is coming that will totally obliterate your home and contents... this will happen within a matter of 24 hours. How fast can you be on the move and what would you try to take? Consider transport, time, money, etc.

Excellent question.

We have a '72-hour' kit prepared, contained in a couple of backpacks. In it are a change or two of clothes for each person, some food, some water packs, a few games, flashlights, etc. We also keep our important papers in these packs.

Various blogs are talking about "BOBs" or "Bug-Out Bags". This is the same thing. Essentially, it is meant to be enough to keep you through three days of an emergency (such as a flood, riot, or earthquake).

We would probably just grab the kit, maybe throw a few more clothes into some other bags, and bugout.

LDS has made a couple of those 72 hour bags (kits). As for me, it would probably take an hour because I am reaching the stage where I care so little about material items - more by situation rather than choice. I would hustle to take my computer and some important documents after saving my family if they needed 'saving'.

I don't have a 72 hour kit packed. I think I could pack my clothing and other necessary items pretty quickly. I can't see having 3 days cloths packed away and never used, just in case. Now, perhaps I should at least prepare 3 days food and water, but I haven't

If I needed to leave quickly and the prospect existed that my home could be destroyed while away, I would want to take my pictures. I would take a few minutes to burn them all to CD from the PC. The CD wouldn't take up a lot of space. Then, I would pack up everything I could fit into my truck if it were an option. I would focus on taking as much of my clothing as possible. Insurance would cover my losses and clothing would be an immediate need in the days and weeks after the disaster.

Run On

I was given a 72 hour kit by my Home Teachers, so when I read this thread I went to see what was in it. Not much. Well let me rephrase that ~ not everything that should be in it. I will have to make a list and purchase the things that are missing.

I am sure I can catch the cats and get them in the carrier, then I would grab my genealogy stuff, the computer and clothes and more food, along with the camp stove, blankets and the stuff for the cats.

I know some people would tell me to just turn the cats out, but they have never been out and I will not chuck them out the door to become food for the racoons! So I guess I had better start fixing a way to hold them in the van so they won't run off on their own.

I have lost way too much *stuff* to care about material things any more. Yet, I really do not want to lose all the genealogy data, copies of certificates and originals that I do have. The best thing to do will be like Tena said, burn it all on a CD. So I guess I had better scan all those documents into my computer! Whew what a job.
