Mainstream liberals are not nearly as controversial as people think. It open forums of discussion, views from modern liberals and progressives are as varied as the descriptions given of them here. They range from as dramatic as Nighthawks description to much milder and simpler like myself.

Some mainstream ideas that go across all levels of liberal minded people are as follows.
1. If it doesn't effect you personally, its not your business. Point in case, gay marriage should be allowed because it has no direct effect on your person. Your religious or personal social beliefs do not matter because it is a matter of personal happiness.

2. The government should spend more of its money on the people instead of fighting wars. Big government is bad, but if we are going to be taxed out the wazoo, then why don't you at least give us something in return for it instead of voting yourselves pay raises. Now this does cause some splits because people like myself believe in less taxes and less government programs while other want more programs but don't like the taxes. They don't understand that it can't be both ways.

3. We believe in a broad liberal interpretation of the majority of laws, allowing people to live their lives the way they see fit. That means that anything regarding morals that doesn't harm someone else should remain outside of government and inside the church. Your morals are your business, learn separate religious belief from a government that governs many people of many different beliefs.

4. Its our planet, our air, our water, start treating like we don't have another planet to go to. Ecology is not a plague, it only benefits us in the long run. You will do it now, or you will pay for it later, but one way or the other, our treatment of our planet will come back to haunt us.

5. Everyone has the right to health care. For some of us, this means that the healthcare industry should be regulated at some level to stop insurance prices from spiralling out of control. To others, this means socialized medicine. But I personally think thats a bad idea.

That covers that majority of what most liberals believe. When put that way, you see that its not as scary and bent on taking over the world as conservatives think. The thing is that most liberals view conservatives as a crazy church fundamentalist bent on combining the church and government into one body to enforce the bibles morals on the world through any means necessary. While you conservatives are laughing, remember that mindset next time you talk to a liberal and try and view what your saying through those eyes. Liberals generally just see themselves as allowing more freedom to the individual.

Liberalism Makes It Easier to be Bad

There are many liberals who lead thoroughly decent lives. And there are conservatives who do not.

But that is not the whole issue.

There is something about liberalism that is not nearly as true about conservatism. The further left one goes, the more one finds that the ideology provides moral cover for a life that is not moral. While many people left of center lead fine personal lives, many do not. And left-wing ideals enable a person to do that much more than conservative ideals do. Ref. Source 5

I haven't met anyone that is truly liberal. Something in their conservative upbringing usually makes them bend certain ways depending on the issue.

Liberals and Conservatives both have good and bad and both sometimes only pay lip service to their ideals. Conservatives tend to be religious and preach Christian morals, but when it comes to liberals they scream and spew hate. Liberals preach giving every diverse group the benefit of the doubt, every group except for conservatives whom they vilify.

I like what I read a few posts up regarding the definition of liberals. If only it were that easy. The first thing missing I see is liberals hell bent mission to take away guns. There are literally thousands of laws regarding guns. Why do they think one more will stop gun violence? There are bad people who don't and will never follow the law and another law won't make a difference.

Next is if it doesn't affect you personally then it doesn't matter. There are those who are religious who believe deeply it does matter to them. They believe it is their religious duty to teach people who are doing wrong and to up to those who advocate what they consider evil.

Beijing somewhat in the middle and having issues on both sides of the spectrum I can see both sides. I hope one day liberals and conservatives can do the same and give each other the benefit of the doubt.
