According to the Foreign Affairs Minister Surujrattan Rambachan, there are reports of people from small Caribbean islands being held as virtual slaves in homes in Trinidad.

"From time to time, you hear in this country, up to this day, about people who are virtually slaves in homes of people in this country. Who have been brought from Guyana... (or) other small islands and working as supposedly maidservants in homes, their passports taken away and they cannot get out of their homes and begging people to get out of the country," Rambachan said.

He was speaking in Parliament on Friday during debate on the Human Trafficking bill at the Red House, Port of Spain.

He said in a United States 2010 trafficking report, Trinidad and Tobago was described as a destination for forced prostitution of women and children and forced labour for men.

Rambachan said in 2007, 71 women and children in Marabella were held by authorities, many with fraudulent passports and some had previously been deported from T&T.

On the issue of smuggling, he said there were reports of people being smuggled into this country through Moruga, Carli Bay and Cedros. He also noted that many people from Asian countries were setting up businesses in T&T, advising that immigration officers look into whether there were any situations of forced labour. Source 2

TV6 Showed a report called "Sex, Drugs & Latinas" Where a reporter spoke to a sex trafficker under the conditions of anonymity. Apparently, the young girls are brought here illegally from Venezuela, Colombia and the Dominican Republic under the promise of having a job. They initially work in bars and doing odd jobs to make them feel 'safe' until later they are demanded to do sex jobs under threats.

The authorities conducts raids on sleazy motels, bars and places of repute but capture the girls and not those instigating it. They do deport these girls but there are more girls coming in the country than those going out. Also there has been no significant breakthroughs with acquiring the leaders of the human trafficking rings.

Another kind of human trafficking is people from other countries wanting to come to Trinidad to get more money and end up having their passport taken and being worked like slaves.

TV6 showed an interview with a representative of the police (Wheeler) who said that human trafficking is evolving in Trinidad and Tobago. Pimps no longer use brothels or known areas to do their business but instead rent up scale apartments where they keep foreign nationals until clients call and then they are driven directly to the client's home.

The police are advising members of the public to be vigilant. If you notice foreign nationals staying in a place near you and they never talk to anyone and only come out at night then that may be a red flag - the police should be contacted.

Title: Human trafficking

Comments: This is a small island 60miles by 40 miles and the populated areas are well and closely inhabited. Citizens are well aware of what is going on around them. This despicable crime could be halted tomorrow if the authorities really put some worthwhile effort into stopping it. However like most crimes on this island there is always a Mr Big behind the business aspect sharing his illegal earnings with others wearing the masks of respectability and positions of authority or someone of status.
