Army Gen. Martin Dempsey

President Obama nominates Army Gen. Martin Dempsey to replace Adm. Mike Mullen as Joint Chiefs chairman.

If confirmed by the Senate, Dempsey would be in the key position of being Obama's senior military adviser overseeing the drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, while also working with incoming Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who still needs to be confirmed by the Senate, in establishing priorities for cutting defense spending. Dempsey, then the commander of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, eliminated the portion of a substantiated inspector general's report of adultery by Maj. Gen. John Custer, who was allowed to retire at his rank with no reduction in his pension benefits. Dempsey then went on to oppose proposed legislation that would have limited the roles of commanders in cases of sexual assault and harassment in the military, which had exploded in the first half of the decade. This is absolutely the wrong way to go with this. I've heard good things about GEN Dempsey but this is discouraging. The military needs more oversight on this, not less. And when someone is uncovered using their rank to gain sexual favors they need to be crushed.
