Criminalize the sale of violent video games

At least one locally owned company finds value in a proposed bill that would criminalize the sale of violent video games to minors in Utah - but questions its method. Graywhale CD Exchange, which has seven Utah locations, already restricts sales of "mature"-rated video games and CDs with explicit lyrics to youths, said store director Dustin Hansen. It is not uncommon, however, for a minor to return later with a parent, who makes the purchase.

If a store decides to establish a policy of not selling M rated games to minors, that's their purgative. They are free to make that business decision, assuming they are willing to take the expected finantial losses. The government (city, state, or federal) has no right to target video games specifically as unlawful to be sold to minors.
Flipping through channels on basic cable you are guaranteed to find numerous example of sex, violence, and foul (by FCC standards) language. Is television regulated, sort of. Is it criminal for a minor to watch a given M rated show, absolutely not. The government could never enforce that, nor do they have the judical standing to do so.
Why are video games continually targeted? Most people understand there is a difference between fantasy and reality. Why can't the government?

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff ponders signing on to brief regarding violent video games case

James P. Steyer, a Stanford law professor and CEO of the not-for-profit Common Sense Media, said Shurtleff is considering adding his name to a document in support of Entertainment Merchants Association, a video game trade association embroiled in a lawsuit with the state of California. If he signs on, Shurtleff will be asking the Supreme Court to rule that it's an unconstitutional violation of free speech for the government to ban any video game's sale to children - regardless of how violent the game's content may be. I think it is good business sense to limit the sale of Mature rated games to minors. IF the parents of these minors want them to play these games and not monitor what their kids are doing then that is on the parents. Parents need to monitor what their kids are doing and there are many games I do not allow in my house or my kids to play.

I think this law has been in place with music and games for a while. The problem is even if you make it illegal the kids will find a way to get it. Many parents will buy these games for their kids. If their parents don't buy it they can probably get it somewhere else if they want.

We no longer live in a society where there are definite boundaries. We live so close together, and things are so available, kids can be exposed and get their hands on these things very easily.

The important thing is to be an involved parent who knows what is going on in the kids life. Making sure to instill values and a sense of morality in their kids.

In this day in age it is the kid who has to make the adult decision more and more often. They will be unable to do this without proper mentors.

Criminalize The Sale Of Violent Video Games

U.S. Supreme Court strikes down California law that would have banned selling violent video games to children.

The 7-2 ruling today was a victory for video game makers and sellers, who said the ban -- which has yet to go into effect -- would extend too far. They say the existing nationwide, industry-imposed, voluntary ratings system is an adequate screen for parents to judge the appropriateness of computer game content. Ref. CNN
