You make a very good point Konquererz. Fear is a very powerful weapon that Governments use to fulfill their agenda. It leads to an erosion in civil liberties and is used to convince people of war.
I think September 11 has had a massive impact on Americans and that's fair enough. But the fear of being nuked is something I have never quite understood. Geographically the US has no threat of a nuke attack, much like Australia.
If you look at the nuclear powers, there is very little threat from any of them. Perhaps North Korea is the only one, but its unclear what arsenal they possess.
Furthermore, America has the best military in the world by far. If an attack did occur then I am certain Americans would cope very well. If you take away the hurricane debacle, Americans are known for their ability to unite and cope in the face of disaster.
The government system would surely adapt. They all have contingency plans for this sort of thing.

I was thinking lately what makes our democratic system work so well. When other countries seem to have a hard time fighting corruption in their counties and the ability to work together in the government. I am not saying we don't have corruption in ours. I beleive if the US fell it would send a terrible mesage to other countries that are struggling with democracy.

I'm not sure that the question really states the question. When the roman empire fell, it was over, gone, ended. But humanity remained. So if the united states fell, man would continue, and we would recover, as man always has, from whatever event, regardless of how catastrophic, had caused the downfall of the US. Its like the old rhyme about Humpty-Dumpty! Who cares about Humpty-Dumpty, but what happened next might make a good game.
The United States is a Union of individual States. Why would we need a federal government in the case of such an event? Here in the State of Washington there is the Washington State Guard. This is not in any way connected to the federal government and, by my understanding of the legislature that created it, they answer to the Governor as the commander in chief, and they are tasked with providing assistance in the event it may become necessary. Who is going to answer to anybody that claims federal authority in such an event? The continuity of government program that brought us FEMA and all of the rumors of a shadow government have come from the question of "what if?" My question is, will the fall of the U.S. come or will it simply be a rebirth of the country due to the continuously growing divide between the rich, who brought us FEMA, and the poor, who are kept in the dark about the inside workings of it. I remember being in Florida for Hurricane Andrew and FEMA's efforts in it's aftermath. I also remember they were ran out of town By The People. Every time FEMA's been called out they have been one big bureaucratic blunder and a waste of tax dollars. I think that if the U.S. ever falls then it will just get back up again, that's what we do best. We'll just have less career politicians, and better foreign policy from our future representatives.

While I think that this is somewhat of a vague question, with many variables effecting a possible answer, I will try to give it a shot. If the US was defeated , I think that first off would have a devastating effect on the world economy, possibly triggering a depression worse that that of the 20th century. International politics would also be greatly impacted,
of course, and I think that some countries would come to our aid, if not for loyalty , then
purely economic reasons. The US does conducts more trade than any other nation, so almost the whole world would be affected.I see this scenario as highly unlikely any time soon.
