Lightning Constantly Over My Head
Today I went outside to feed the dogs and as I looked up I saw something I have never before seen - lightning within one cloud above constantly flashing over and over with one second or less in between each flash just like a Christmas tree - no exaggeration. This kept up for about the space of 30 minutes I believe and it looked similar to what you would see in a horror movie where lightning constantly strikes the 'dark castle' atop the mountain. I am used to one big flash then you wait awhile and another big flash, etc. Can anyone explain this?
It sounds like cloud-to-cloud lightning. Just like if you comb your hair in the dark when there is a lot of static around, or chew wintergreen LifeSavers you create a lot of little sparks. Well, as I understand it, when conditions are right, there can be high static between the clouds, and it is relieved by the many flashes of lightning between them.
I have heard that the most remarkable form of this can come during a snowstorm, so that the flashes light up the falling snow. Unfortunately, despite many, many years of snowstorms, I have never seen this particular phenomenon.
However, I have seen a lot of the cloud-to-cloud type lightning, usually in the form of "heat" lightning in California and Arizona.
I was so excited about it, so I called my wife outside to look and with a bland face she says, "Oh, yes, this happens all the time here", so it must be something related to weather conditions in Argentina - which by the way are unbelievably crazy - one moment it is very hot then very cold, etc. That as you mention might be the cause of the static discharges.
