Some people believe that a man dying wants to clear his conscience before he meets God, and/or that he has nothing left to lose, so why lie?

Because people are vulnerable although not all of them care enough. My grandfather was an alcoholic and of course his family fall apart, when he was dying my grandmother convinced her two sons to go and see him and say goodbye, they did not want it because of the kind of life their father made them live and at the point you may think this guy would tell them something uplifting to his own children, he told the oldest that he will never be anybody and basically in few words he cursed him. Sad enough, that was not true, my uncle tried very hard to be "somebody" yet he committed suicide 4 years ago.

Dying men not always tell the truth or want to fix things with others, but all the opposite, such is the example I gave of my grandfather who was also an Atheist.
