"Visitors to Brigham Young's Salt Lake City satirized Utah's 'peculiar people' as frontier blackguards and homely polygamous wives," observed Rugh, a professor of history at BYU. In 1947, Utah observed its centennial by emphasizing pioneer history, Rugh said.
