2004 Summer Olympic Football Is Here!

Well, the Summer Olympics are almost here, but the Football tournament has already started and is in full gear. This discussion will address how the tournament in Athens unfolds, etc. Here are some preliminary results from the mens draw, and the official FIFA website. If there is interest in the womens tournament (LDS_forever???), let me know, we can discuss this as well, I am not biased.

Cool, I guess they were feeling sorry for Argentina with that match-up? Where is Brasil, France and the USA in that action? I always like to see the USA play simply because I know how badly they want to be internationally recognized as a team to contend with in any match.

None of the above mentioned teams qualified for the Olympics! I know this is shocking; I will need to check the qualification rounds to see what happened to them.

Nah, I can't believe that! Then it is a sold story for Argentina or Portugal, that is if they are playing with their big guns and not just newbies on the scene.

Yep, Argentina won 6-0 against Serbia and Montenegro and the gold medal of course is what we are looking for here since is the only title left the Argentinian team needs (we got them all!). So I really hope Argentina win the gold in the Olympics.
Now, can anyone explain me why they started playing the football match before the actual opening of the Games? undecided.gif

My guess is to be able to fit everything in to the allotted time slots. Football games take a long time to complete, longer than most of the events, and with both a men's and women's football tournament, they had to get a head start.

Thanks for that explanation Malealexander. I thought it was odd that they played before the actual Games started. Anyhow, I'm very excited about the football team, I really look forward seeing the gold medal in our team! Who knows, the final may be between Argentina and Portugal!

Some more scores from todays action:

Korea 1 - Mexico 0
Mali 2 - Greece 0
Huge upset!!!
Australia 5 - Serbia and Montenegro 1
Argentina 2 - Tunisia 0
Argentina keeps rolling!

The way things are shaping up, Argentina could be playing Portugal in the next round, which eliminates that matchup for a finals LDS_forever?!
