Doom

I am amazed that video games are now the reasons to make a movie, especially a video game based on nothing but shooting and killing, then again, this is what is considered entertainment these days, I will not go to see this at all. However, if you do see this please place a review here either to confirm or reject my assumptions about it.

Doom

Based on the hit computer game about Marines sent to investigate what went wrong on a space station, only to face a far greater evil unlike any other.

'DOOM' LEADS SLOW WEEKEND FOR THEATERS

The Rock did not meet his doom at the box office, but his latest action flick
came in with a light pop instead of a bang during another slow weekend at
movie theaters.

S P O I L E R

I went to see "Doom" with mixed feelings and much apprehension about the possibility of being stranded in the theatre to watch a really...BAD movie.

However....................

I was pleasantly surprised that this feature didn't stink to high heaven. The plot was altered enough so that it wouldn't be a total rehash of any of the video or computer games. Albeit with more than enough familiarity to those same video games that the fans of the "Doom" games would feel at home.

The "Rock" is the big star attraction in billing this movie, but he is actually not the primary actor in it. The story unfolds around the Rock leading a Team of Troubleshooters to a privately owned offplanet research facility through a matter transmission portal from earth. The planetoid upon which the research facility is located has gone into full alert for reason unknown. The team is to be accompanied by a female scientist who works for the Corporation that owns the planetoid research facility. When asked why they were sending a female along with his team, the Rock is told that apparently she was the only one stupid enough to volunteer. Coincedentally, one of the Rocks team of interplanetary mercenaries just also happens to be the brother of...her. You know...the stupid female scientist.

The job of the Troubleshooters is to go through the matter transmission portal, secure the Research Facility, allow the female scientist to extract all the research notes from the computers...and then to either end the security quarantine...or if the situation is bad....to come back with the reasearch notes after ...sterilizing ( as in killing )...everything and everyone within the Research Planetoid. Apparently the Corporation isn't taking any chances due to the fact that they had a few mysterious murders occur on the same planetoid some time before.

Once the Troubleshooters arrive on the Planetoid, they find that chaos has run rampant. Many of the scientists are already dead, although a smaller group of maybe a dozen scientists are found locked away in a lab. While investigating what killed the scientists, ( and smashed through some of the steel doors and walls ) the Troubleshooters ultimately discover that although some of the researchers were doing purely legal research, others had been mucking around with re-constructing an alien lifeform through bones that they had discovered while doing archaeological exploration. Although they never actually cloned an alien in its entirety, the 'mad' scientists did manage to recreate enough alien matter to extract an enzyme from it which was unknown to human DNA. The trouble began when they injected this enzyme into a convicted criminal that the Corporation secretly had imported to the facility for use as a guinea pig. The enzyme caused mutations and before they knew it they had a murderous monstosity on their hands.

One monster isn't good enough though. Apparently whoever is attacked and infected by being bitten by the monster.....gets a dose of the alien enzyme in them as well...which creates ....You got it...More monsters. So..the Rock and his gang wind up hunting down about a dozen monsters...who they now recognize as being former scientists. The female scientist that accompanied the group delves into the notes and discovers toward the end of the movie...that the enzyme doesn't automatically turn everyone into monsters...it simply takes whatever is inside a person.....whether it be goodness or some hint of evil....and magnifies it exponentially. The alien race had developed the enzyme themselves to advance their species....but unwittingly had caused the extinction of their race in the process.

In a final act of love...the female scientist is forced to inject her brother with the enzyme after he has been mortally wounded during a battle with one of the monsters. She calls upon their shared bond of sibling love to help him focus on the good side of his nature, hoping that it will save his life. He then passes out. When he awakens...his wounds are healed and he has become.....Uber-Mercenary!!!! He picks up a weapon and then proceeds...( during several minutes of "First Person Shooter" perspective) to wipe out most of the monsters in the research facility. The movie winds up with...................hmmm, maybe I don't want to tell all of it.

Okay, I give this Movie.... 3 starorange.gif' /> because even though I went to see it with a free ticket, it didn't suck compared to most of the Video Game turned Movie genre films. There were some surprises, and the special effects were excellent although the acting would never merit any sort of academy award. Its good for watching on a saturday afternoon when you have just finished mowing the lawn.

<table width=Message Edited!
