Krusten shakes her head in disgust and trots off to get the handkerchief using the tip of her spear to get it from the ground while speaking to herself, "Foolish little girl".
Krusten in a show of defiance rides back to the mansion casually showing the handkerchief on her spear. She then rejoins the group to see what they've been up to.
Ferrin doesn't recognize the men, but since he is in front, he runs up to tug on their clothing and with pleading eyes, he looks up at them and calmly asks, "Please, misters, tells me what happeneds."
In the fields:
Krusten picks up the handkerchief with the tip of her spear. The pink linen has been folded and tied on the four corners to form a bundle: something quite heavy is inside. While the warrior starts heading back to the main part of the ranch, Abigail flanks her and, without stopping, grabs the bundle saying "This is mine". Then she gallops away, towards the mounted servants.
The big, sturdy commoner looks at Ferrin in a puzzled way: "We have been attacked, boy. What are you doing here and where are your parents?". But he is immediately pressed up by the questioning crowd and loses his focus on the Halfling. The voices of the peasants create a babel of sounds, mixing up in a general noise that makes the ranch look like a fish market during the busy hour. To your surprise, the shoutings cease all of a sudden. All the heads turn to the north where, like a revised Moses parting the waters, Simon Goatshearer is passing through the crowd, followed by the butler and other two servants. The mass of peasants part in two to allow his passage. Un unnatural silence falls on the ranch. When he reaches the three commoners by the main gate, he stops and orders with a deep tone of authority: "Now, tell me exactly what and how it happened. And be detailed about it".
The men tell their story. They left in the morning with two carts full of carded wool: the weekly shipment to Loya. They were assaulted by the bandits less than two hours after leaving the village. One of the men refused to drop his club and this caused the brigands to lose their temper and start killing the workers without any restrain. Unlike the first assault, two days before, this one was a bloodbath. Five men were left on the ground, dead. The story becomes now a detailed list of names and assignments of the five victims to allow their identification.
Goatshearer listened to the report in silence, without allowing any feeling to perturb his motionless expression. At the mention of the names, cries and sighs emerge from the silent mass.
The merchant gives disposition to allow the workers two free days for the funereal ceremonies and organize an expedition to recover the corpses. After giving some more orders to his followers, he turns his back and heads back to the mansion.
The two personal servants start looking for the right people amongst the mass of workers to organize the tasks set by their boss. Eventually, one of them approaches your group, which now includes also Krusten, and invites you to take part to a meeting that will take place shortly in the trader's adobe. All of you are invited this time, he specifies. You will have just the time to collect your things, if you left anything in the common room, before heading to the mansion. The commoner is waiting for your answer, ready to guide you to the meeting room. Edited: Bruconero on 11th Jan, 2013 - 2:22am
Krusten shakes her head at the annoying Abigail. Perhaps there may be more to her taunts but just the thought of putting up with her antics makes her lose interest. She makes her way to the meeting still holding on to the horse she was riding as though she had just won her as a prize.
Ferrin's eyes widen more and more as the full story comes to light. He is at once wounded by the news and excited to hear that the bandits haven't moved on. "Fear nots, peoples!" His squeaky voice cries out to the throng, "We will goes to finds these bandits and bring thems to justices!" Turning to the personal servant, he announces, "I woulds be honoreds to helps with the plannings." With that, he practically vaults himself across the yard in his excitement to retrieve the bag left in the common room before heading to the meeting place.
Faruq bows his head as the man relives the carnage. Silently, he offers a brief prayer to Semina, knowing that death is a part of life. But that is not enough. What did these men die for? Wool? Faruq suddenly becomes extremely angry, but keeps from raging.
A very different Faruq starts walking towards the meeting. He is determined and his eyes have lost any hint of mirth. Talk is tiresome. I am ready to kill, he thinks, but keeps walking towards the trader's adobe anyway. Edited: Tonatha on 11th Jan, 2013 - 3:54am
