Krusten observes the militiaman for some time: the man stands guard by the front door of the mansion without moving from his assigned spot. She tries to have a look at the back entrance of the building but another guard is checking that door. Seeing no way in, she heads for the small cemetery.
Ja'laron follows the peasant named Rusty and finds out that, like everybody else, he is headed for the burial ground. There, he spots the other party members getting to the place almost at the same time.
A huge crowd is gathered outside the small graveyard, looks like not only the full personnel of Goatshearer's ranch joined the doleful event but people from the surrounding farms as well. Amongst the uncountable unfamiliar faces, the party can recognize Butch, the innkeeper, together with his mother, the old tavern maid. The ceremony takes place in a sober way. Goatshearer talks to the mass reassuring his townfolks about his total dedication to the punishment of those responsible for these new death. The religious part is handled by Zachary, the supervisor, which spreads a mixture of soil, crumbled leaves and his own saliva on the chest of the victims. For two of them, instead of spitting on the mush, he adds to it tears of their widows.
Is not long before the corpses are buried and everybody head back to their home, leaving a sense of powerless desperation still stiring in the air.
During the ritual, Ja'laron keeps an eye on Rusty who attends the funeral next to his friends, Slim and Bullneck. The men are silent for the whole time without having any kind of strange or otherwise interesting behaviour.
Krusten focuses on the butler that stands next to Zak and few steps behind Goatshearer and Abigail. Differently from most aristocrats or other members of rich families, Simon Goatshearer doesn't seem to have personal servants and no handmaid is seen next to Abigail either.
Long shadows start to fall on Lowmeadow and the dark clouds gathered in the sky bring the promise of a rainy night.
Out of Character:
Is up to the party now decide what to do now. Plan your next moves, you have several choices. Is late afternoon, you judge you still may have up to 2 or 3 hours of daylight, depending on the weather.
Krusten seeks to join the butler at some point in conversation. She will demand his attention silently and ask to speak privately. If he resists she will say she knows something about him and uses her intimidation. Again, her objective is to find out the truth of what is going on.
Ferrin wonders how they can possibly send these souls properly to the life beyond without a barrel of salt to prepare the bodies and a floating funeral pyre. He will remain somber and quiet, but anxiously shifts from foot to foot.
After the funeral, when the group is together discussing their next move, he expresses his desire to get on with dispensing justice as quickly as possible.
Faruq offers a quick prayer to Semina. Death is indeed a necessary part of life, no matter how meaningless it can seem.
Afterwards, he finds himself understanding the little halfling for the first time. He shares the same feelings and is antsy as well.
Out of Character:: We need to meet up so we can talk to each other about our observations to norrow down our searches. And focus more on main targets. The three I am interested in are not ring leaders pawns at best. There has to be a strong canidate. We need to meet and talk about what is next. Plus we need to possibly look at some of the towns outside of this to see if someone is selling large amount of wool. Good job for our AFK player to do?
In Character:: I meet up with the group to report everything I have found out and see if they were able to gather any clues from the ambush site.
With a somber look Anntreen responds to the question. "It was horrible. The battle, the battle was... No. They never, never had a chance. Blood, so much blood." Eyes welling up and on the verge of tears Anntreen walks off needing some air and a bit of alone time.
Tomas changed into his robe for the event and keeps his head bowed in respect, unable to observe the crowd. He mutters prayers to Felnuus and also intently listens to the prayers the others give.
Afterwards, he will not vote for or against following the tracks tonight. While the coming rain may wash away some tracks, marching in the rain and dark is not as easy as it may appear.
While the rest of the party, that now includes Ja'laron, look for a retired spot where to plan the next course of action, Krusten intercepts the butler on his way back to the mansion and informs him of her intention to have a private chat. The man rises his left eyebrow in an interrogative expression and smiles ironically. He is still young, on his early therties. He is wearing quality clothes for being just a steward but this could just be his "Good" outfit, kept ready only for special occasions. All his figure is tidy anyway: he is well shaved and his long whiskers are trimmed as to form two thin spikes pointing downwards and gradually fading. A young woman would consider him handsome, specially in comparison with the other rough villagers.
"I have no objections to it, young Lady", he answers, "But to avoid gossips around here, maybe better if we don't talk in my room in the mansion. Just follow me at a certain distance, there's a place that should be far enough from curious eyes and ears". This said, he heads in the direction of the two buildings used as accomodations for the servants and workers employed in the ranch. Between the two houses and at a certain distance from them is a small shack, used for storing tools and other things. The butler tries its door and realizing is not locked quickly slides inside.
The party settles down to assess the situation. On his way home, Simon Goatshearer stops a moment next to the adventurers. He approaches the paladin and says: "Brother Tomas, I have faith in You. What happened this morning can't be forgotten. People here will not forget and neither will I. A cargo of wool is not worth their lives, we are not talking about money anymore now: bloodshed is unforgivable. As I said before, feel free to move in my estate as you see necessary and don't be afraid to bring your investigation inside my house walls as well. I grant you total freedom. If you need help while inquiring about the personnel here, please refer to Zachary, I consider him a trusted man. Just don't ask him to accompany you or get directly involved in the inquiry: that could endanger his position and reputation amongst the workers. Thank You again for Your help, I hope You will come with positive news as soon as possible". The merchant turns his back and goes to the mansion, walking slowly: he looks at least ten years older than the man you met for the first time this morning in front of that fireplace.
