Comments: I was wondering what you thought about SMF for very large communities where posts are in the millions and members are in the the tens of thousands?

It can but two things would have to happen:

1. You will need fantastic hosting resources (this is true with any site that large)
2. You may need to ensure all your source code including modifications are not redundantly querying the database. Some things may need to be limited in some way and not overdone especially where media files are concerned.

I have not thought about this before, is there a set number of posts to determine what is a large, medium and small community?

My own community I will say falls into the medium category. I would consider a community large if it had over a million plus worthy posts (not just one word posts and silliness) and thousands of members.
