My only thoughts come from a TV tag line from the series "A-Team". Mr. T said it best, "I pity the fool (In this case Trump and all those associated with him.)"
Followed by an equally stirring meme, featuring the poison contest from "The Princess Bride". Instead of the contest of poison, it's a contest between choices for President. "Clearly I am not a fool." Therefore I choose neither of them and am writing in my own candidate.
No one thought that Trump would be running for president with the republicans behind him, I'm sure no one thinks he will really be president either but he might prove us wrong again!

To add to your quote Malcombshaw as it relates to the current choice of candidates "They were both poisoned" either way we go I feel like we will end up like Vizzini.

I know it is cliche but Americans are polarized. Being herded into either party's camp by ignorance and fear. I am not surprised by what is happening, more than anything it saddens me.
What always surprises me, is the look of shock and horror on citizens and voters faces after the elections when their nominee turns their backs on their promises and keeps on breaking them.
Normally, I would vote for myself again in this election. I have now for 3 of 8 presidential elections, so it wouldn't be new nor novel for me to do it, but I really cannot this time. I have watched over the last 7 plus years where executive powers have been used and not checked by the judicial nor the congressional branches. Basically, we are really seeing very aggressive expansion of federal powers that are not granted by the constitution through executive orders or a congress that takes it upon themselves to pass these changes and are allowed by the Supreme Court. With Justice Scalia having died, the Supreme Court is in the balance with this election. So while I would love to write myself in again on this one, I will instead be holding my nose and pulling the lever.

Whatever people experience in life influences what they support. If you feel that you are being treated unfairly or that someone is benefiting and you are not then when someone says things that expresses what you feel then you are inclined to follow them. That is what makes Trump likable for many modern Republicans. True conservatives will not like Trump's representation of the GOP but since they are the minority it does not matter. The major consideration for Trump is whether those minority Republicans will vote for him or abstain in November.

I am not exactly sure about that in total. Take the city of Detroit. It has been entirely run by Democrats for over 50 years now. If you talk to people in Detroit, they will definitely say they haven't been treated fairly. Yet, they will once again vote Democrat in this election. You would think at some point in this 50 year journey where they have watched their city decline and businesses leave that they would try something different. There has been a war on Poverty since Pres. Johnson gave us welfare programs. 24 Trillion dollars later… we still have poverty. Apparently, there is more poverty than ever before if we listen to what they tell us. However, large parts of our society still vote as a monolith, no matter what is said. Apparently, we are just one government program away from the "Great Society".
I definitely would agree that conservatives and libertarians are far more likely to break with the Republican party if they feel they aren't being represented. This has been a big problem for the Republican Party going all the way back to Ross Perot. I can attest to that! Voted for him the first time he ran for President.

Maybe the way the Republicans are doing things now will help give rise to the alternative voting options that digruntled party members have that they didnt think about before. Independents and Liberterians might want to leave their doors open.
