Gen. John Allen, the top commander in Afghanistan, has been cleared in misconduct inquiry, according to defense officials. He was under investigation for communications with Jill Kelley, the woman who is said to have received threatening e-mails from Paula Broadwell, David Petraeus' biographer. Ref. USAToday

President Obama accepted the request to retire from Gen. John Allen today. Allen had stepped down from leading the U.S. Mission in Afghanistan and was considered for a commanding role in Europe, but that nomination had been put on hold, pending an investigation into allegations of improper emails with a Tampa socialite. He was completely exonerated last month by a months-long Defense Department inspector general investigation that pored through his correspondence. Ref. USAToday
