HOUSE TO BACK DVD-EDITING ABILITY

When Jeff Weidle, a Houston father of two, wanted to watch the thriller "I, Robot" with his family recently, he had no qualms about buying a DVD of the PG-13-rated film, even though he normally shuns violence and nudity in television and movies.

I would have to agree with the movie companies here and say that this is an infringement on the product they have created. Basically, Hollywood is making their movie, and then another company is editing this movie as they see fit, and providing a different version of it. The end-result could be a movie that is very different from the original. The way I see it movies are created with certain ratings, and it is the role of parents to determine whether their children are allowed to see these movies or not. If the parents want to watch the movie, then wait till the kids are in bed; this is one of the sacrifices you made when you became a parent.

There are a number of companies that I know of that edit movies to reflect the standards of someone or organization. In my mind if a movie is so bad that it needs to be edited extensively then why even watch it? Maybe this can be done to suit both parties by the editing company gaining permission or some sort of royalty pact.

HOUSE TO OK FILM FILTER

The U.S. House is expected to give final passage today to a bill that would legalize a technology that filters sex scenes, bad language and violence from commercial DVDs -- thereby letting Salt Lake-based ClearPlay Inc. off the legal hook in its long-running battle with the movie industry.

This allows filtering but not editing. So, there is only one known company currently that this will help. This will not make it legal to take a copy of a DVD you own and have the bad stuff edited out. You can run it against a filter so that you don't see the bad stuff, but it remains on the DVD so if run without the filter it would still be there.

I don't see why the movie industry cares so much. If you allow the editing, more people will watch the movie than will if they must see it with all the bad stuff in it. Seems to me Hollywood will make more money allowing the edits.

Yes, I say that the movie makers have a right to say what can and cannot be changed on their product. These editing companies are basically making money off modifying someone elses work without permission or paying royalties or anything. To me it seems the equivalent to painting copies of an Artists picture and airbrushing out the "naughty bits" and selling it to museums. That is not the picture that the artist wanted to make and that person had no right to modify it- much less make money off of it. Same goes for movies. If companies want to continue to edit films then they need to work with the movie industry- not ignore them. Directors can be quite sensitive about their work and generally don't like someone mucking about with a film that took them years to create.
