THE WAR AGAINST 'DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES'

This week the new ABC smash hit "Desperate Housewives" came under fire by a leading conservative group for portraying motherhood as a "worthless chore."

My initial perception of this show is that it is a version of the HBO series "Sex and the City" using housewives instead of single New Yorkers as the character base. It is also toned down a bit for broadcast TV instead of cable. My wife has watched the 2 episodes of the show so far, and from the little that I have seen, it does not seem any more lewd than say Melrose Place.

I've never seen "Sex in the City" (I don't watch much TV). I have seen the ads for "Desperate Housewives" and saw another ad for the Oprah show where one of the actresses demonstrates how she teaches other women on the program to do a strip-tease dance. I can't believe they are showing this kind of stuff on regular television! It's actually "soft porn," and it's got no business on broadcast TV. The big networks claim they are just programming what people want to see, and they have the big ratings to prove it. I think that is a bad indicator for the state of our society.

In my opinion, of course.

I haven't seen the show so I can give a review on it but it seems the television nowdays have become too involved with sex and yes, as the producers have said, this is what the people want to see and because show business is about money, they are not going to stop but encourage it even more. Who is to blame?. rolleyes.gif

My father just loves this show, but it's because of the sleaze and filth that he does and he will even tell you that. He loves to share the "juicy" details with whoever will listen and talk with him about it. That show is just like a soap opera, only worse. I think it is a terrible example to all of the youth out there, and to all of us, who may see this and think that this is what marriage and family is all about. Adultery, lying, coveting, gossiping, plotting against another, and lustfulness, among other things, do occur in life. However, I feel like this show glorifies these things and really displays a lower form of society. I would feel the same way about any show who's sole purpose seems to be a cheap and disrespectful form of entertainment.

Report: 'Housewives' Flip Out at Shoot

They may appear sultry and ready for summer on the May cover of Vanity Fair, but according to the magazine, the stars of ABC's "Desperate Housewives" were actually steaming angry.

Vanity Fair's cover proclaims: "You wouldn't believe what it took just to get this photo!" The article acknowledges that the poolside photo-shoot, in which the five women appear in different colored bathing suits, was manned by an ABC representative who was to make sure that certain demands were met including that Teri Hatcher didn't select her wardrobe first or appear in the center of any group photo.

"Whatever you do," the ABC rep, who wasn't identified by name, said when he arrived on the set, "do not let Teri go to wardrobe first."

Despite the rep's plea, Hatcher was the first "housewife" to visit wardrobe, and she had consulted with the stylist days in advance. At one point, the rep proclaimed: "This is a problem. I'm getting text messages from Eva (Longoria). Everything is not fine."

In my opinion, it just gives us all a clue what even portraying immorality can do to our relationships with others. Those women are working in close quarters trying to be the worst bad girl on the set. And it's tearing them apart -- they can't even be friends. I think it's sad.

Actually I enjoy it..the shows plots are quite powerful..and it has a strong backdrop dealing with the consequences of actions and responsibility. To be honest I've never seen Sex and the city...but this show reminds me of Picket Fences because of it's digs at smal town/suburbia life
