I have looked at a increase in the minimum wage a bit differently. I am what would be termed "upper middle class" by US income levels. Everytime a minimum wage increase occurs, I get nothing extra in my paycheck. Actually, my paycheck eventually shrinks to some degree, as I pay more for the things I buy. While for the person making minimum wage, it is a pay increase, for me, it is a pay cut.
This is a pretty harsh view, I realize.
The belief that minimum wage should provide you with enough money to support your family is flawed in our current job market. Say BIFF only wants to be a Burger King Burger Maker and he has 2 children and a wife. Biff works 40hrs per week and should expect to make enough money to support his family. Pretend this were true:
How much would a happy meal actually cost? If we all paid enough for Biff to live good, how much would we have? If I don't get a huge raise, Biff is not making too much less than I am. Why did I go to school and work that hard? If they do give me a huge raise, Biff is in the same place he was before and in need of another minimum wage adjustment. Hey, that 16 yr old kid next to Biff on the grill is doing the same job, shouldn't he get the same pay? Wow, that kid is making enough to support a small family...what does he do with all that money? Why don't I just have kids and quit work...they can go to work at Burger King!
I know it is far fetched...but not THAT far fetched.
Politicians always want to redistribute wealth (some groups more than others). There will always be jobs that pay highly (not everyone has the skill to do these jobs and are paid for it...supply and demand). There will always be jobs that pay poorly (nearly everyone has the skill to do these jobs and are paid accordingly...supply and demand).
Interestingly enough, in St Louis, where I lived growing up, I saw many signs for part-time fast food jobs. Apparently, kids are not wanting to work much any more and they cant find enough people to fill these jobs. GUESS WHAT! They are offering more than minimum wage to get employees. The market works itself out. However, there will always be jobs that pay well and some that don't. Trying to force low paying jobs to pay better is just INFLATION...Government Style.
Just a thought,

The best way to fight poverty is to increase the opportunities for low-skilled workers to obtain more education and training, not to raise the minimum wage.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. Unfortunately, the article link doesn't work, but the gist of the above statement rings clear. I am so tired of those who say we have to raise minimum wages. But if you think about it, when those wages are raised, now employers are forced to pay more, and if productivity does not rival cost, then employers are forced to either cut back production or cut back employees. Guess which one they will choose? Only by providing more opportunities to low-skilled workers, so they can increase their productivity, will the raise in minimum wages be justified. I just wish more people would understand this.

I think if they are going to keep minimum wage they should not take so long to raise the rate. The wage should go up as the cost of living goes up, so that will make it eaiser for families that are only able to make minmum wage to support themselves without having to rely on the government for help
Yeaaahhhh...minimum wage has increased! Boooo...I just got fired? That is the reality for about 3 workers at Pepi's Pizza in Arizona. That is the reality for many teenagers in the fast food world following the minimum wage hike...

Actually, many fast food places (the big ones) already pay higher than minimum wage to get people to work. However, this does hit the smaller private owners pretty hard and in turn hits some of the workforce that should have benefitted by this increase.

California was raised to $7.50 as of Jan. 1, 2007.
We have several payroll clients - mostly doctors - who hire just-out-of-school CNA's at minimum wage. The good ones are kept and then bumped up to a little bit higher wage, while the not-so-good ones are let go. Suddenly, the minimum wage is the same as what the good ones are already making. So, not only do the doctors have to pay the new minimum wage, but the good ones that they have already increased now have to be adjusted to keep competitive.
A couple of our clients called to ask if there is "any way around" the new wage law. They haven't let anyone go (yet), but I expect the staff will be running leaner in the next few months.
And as you said, Vincenzo - it's actually a negative from my check. I haven't had a raise in a couple of years, but you can bet prices are going up.

I know how you feel not to have a job, I think minmum wages is good for teenagers, but not for people who use to making 10.00 to 11.00 hour jobs. Then have to take a huge pay cut to work the shorts hours that they can get and not actually make 40 hours. So I think it is not worth it for adults who are use to a higher rate of pay.
