I feel fairly comfortable with making repairs on my own computer. I have upgarded memory and the hard drive and have also installed a DVD-Rom and replaced a CPU fan. I even replaced the power supply when it went out and diagnosed the problem myself. As an engineer, I would feel out of place having to pay someone to fix my computer. Even if it took me a week or two to fix it, I'd want to do it on my own.
I've fixed so many other people's computers, as well as built and upgraded them, I would be ashamed to turn a desktop over to anyone else to repair.
A laptop is a completely different matter. While I would not be afraid to open one up, they are way to complex, with multi-layer circuit boards, everything integrated on the main board, etc. I might try if it was just a matter of replacing a disk drive or fan, but not if it was more complex than that. Laptops are also much more sensitive to static electricity, so a static-free workstation is a necessity, and I don't have one at home.
I not only make my own repairs, but I build my own computers. I have found that I do not have nearly as many problems when I build my own because I have something they don't, a vested interest in how my machine performs. The other reason I build my own is that I make sure that it is fully upgradable on every level. Now days, companies make there desktops so proprietary that you have to go to them to get parts and often times cannot upgrade them with out taking them the machine.
I myself as many others have the ability to build and or repair my own personal system. While this is in many ways an advantage all in it's own it also allows me the ability to build and repair computers for many different clients over the years. When I first started repairing computers in 1997 I charged 50$ US per hour. My rates over the years have risen greatly. From 50$ to 72$ and now at it's all time high of 135$ US per hour. I have been told by many that my rates have always been on the higher side of the line yet I remind many different people that jobs many people would charge 2 hours to complete I would have completed for the first hours charge.
