What they were thinking? They were probably acting really strange and obvious and that's why they were caught. It is amazing to me that someone would risk their lives in this sort of activities.

Well, the idea is not crazy because the reasoning behind is that nobody would suspect that nuns would have drugs on them. The only reason they were caught was because they weren't acting the part properly and were very nervous.
