Your Masks Of Life

Are we really individuals, real people with real goals and thoughts, or are we all a bunch of fake communal minded people. Does the name really run deep?
Ever since we were born, we have been taught how to think, what is good, what is bad. When we have grown to adolecence, people are wavered our decisions, and some of us find ourselves acting different around different people. Could we not call this, differnt act in fact a mask? Do we not wear different masks with different people, cultures and such?

Do you think that wearing a mask is bad? Does it make you no longer an individual? Who are we?

Fun, yes we use different masks with different people, I suppose that's why the original greek word for 'Hypocrit' means 'mask'. Most people have this deep sense of need to be accepted by the crowd, other have 'masks' because of fear, others because they don't want to express their truly self....different reasons. I personally try to be as honest as possible but yes I find myself sometimes smiling to someone that I do not like, just to be polite...oh well...

There are certain times in our lives where I think it is appropriate to behave in different ways. I don't talk the same way when speaking to my church leader or his wife, or my boss and his wife and kids, as I do when speaking to my sisters or my kids. Don't get me wrong, I'm not mean or rude to my family, but there is an entirely different realm of familiarity. I don't call my Bishop "dude" but I might call my son that. smile.gif Now, I'm still "myself" when I'm dealing with others whom I respect, I'm just don't treat them in a familiar manner. I don't think that's hypocritical. And I don't think being polite to people you don't like is hypocritical either -- it's showing forth respect, charity, and dignity, whether for yourself or them makes no difference.

In my opinion, of course.

I think at some point in our lives, we all wear masks. In a society where it is frowned upon to not to follow the in-crowd, people are more likely to portray themselves as someone different in order to belong.
Others simply do not love themselves and don't like othes to see who they really are. I've found that masks are a form of self-protection, keeping the outside world out. As our world becomes more and more materialistic and individualistic, I'm afraid that our masks are going to be permanently glued on.

Why do you say afriad? Whats wrong with having a mask? Maybe our masks are really...what makes us...us. As we have many masks for different ppl, maybe our combinations of masks makes us who we are..

I totally agree with farseer. Just because we act to different people different ways doesn't necessarily make us a hypocrite. I also agree that these different masks make us who we are. For instances a mother, student, friend, boss etc...

Well thats different, thats more of a respect issue than a mask. You do act differently, but you still have to respect authority. You all sound so offended i didnt mean to. I was just throwing an idea out there, i never said it was right.

O.k I'm confused. How can a mask make us who we are? The purpose of a mask is to disguise and to hide. Who we portray with the mask is different from the person behind it.
I honestly don't think that its right to wear different masks for different people. I'm not referring to the respect issue as in talking differently to your loved one as opposed to your boss. I'm talking about something that goes much deeper. I'm talking about putting on a smile for others when you're hurting inside or portraying yourself as this confident, successful happy person when you're really a coward, afraid, lonely and sad all the time. Yes I am afraid for people who don't show who they really are because with that mask you can't help them.
Maybe I'm putting my own twist to the word mask. Your meaning of the word is not the same as mine. Acting differently with different people? Yes we have been raised to behave in certain ways with those we meet but we should always be true to ourselves. In order to be healthy mentally and physically its important that we love who we are with faults and all. For ex. if you go into a relationship with someone and you put on a mask then your relationship is based on a lie.
