Since I was a teenager I knew I needed to wear braces, the thing is that they were always way too expensive to afford. Several times over the years, I payed visits to differents orthodontists who have recommend braces. My jaw is too small for the amount of teeth I have. The only two teeth I have to fix are my two upper incisors (they are somewhat crooked). The rest of the teeth are fine. The thing is that my gums bleed often because of this same problem and I would like to know whether the orthodontist can put braces if my gums bleed often (they do not bleed a lot, just a little bit). One of my dentists gave me some meds for it and stopped but then he said it would continue as long as I did not put braces on. I also have to remove my wisdom teeth. I would like to know if the procedure hurts knowing that my wisdom teeth are in good shape and also how long after removing my wisdom teeth I would be able to put on braces.
I've had my upper wisdom teeth removed because they were causing extreme pain in my mouth. All four were recommended to be removed, but since the lower ones were impacted, I decided not to remove those. To get both top teeth removed, from the time I sat in the chair to to the time I walked out the door was about 20 minutes. My surgeon had this 4 prong needle that injected novocaine into four sights at once around each tooth and it was ready in minutes to be pulled. They came out intact and I was on my way. Besides, the percoset and vicodin I took afterward made sure I felt no pain
As far as braces, I'm sure you can put them on as soon as the sites heal from the wisdom teeth removal. With braces, you are going to have periods of time when they adjust them that you are going to be in pain and feel like all your teeth are wiggling, but just keep in mind the end result!
About bleeding gums... mine used to bleed a little bit, but every time I've gone to the dentist they have given me a product called Periomed (like a mouthwash) that is supposed to desensitize your gums and they eventually stop bleeding. I don't think bleeding gums should stop you from getting braces, go for it!
1. The first thing you should do is remove the wisdom teeth. It will make the orthodontic treatment much easier and will prevent the chance of relapse. Read what Renee wrote and ... be brave. (Also there is a thread related to wisdom teeth removal. I think I posted some tips there)
2. Be sure that you don't have a periodontal problem (other than that related to the bad alignment of the teeth). I'm quite positive that you are ok from this point of view if the orthodontist hasn't mentioned it, but it doesn't hurt to ask, because the braces could aggravate the problem.
3. Get the braces.
4. Be sure to wash your teeth very carefully. There is a higher chance of developing decays and/or gum inflammation while you wear the braces if you don't wash them properly. Also you may try some mouthwash containing Clorhexidine.
5. Be patient ... the results don't come over night.

There are two possibilities:
(1) Periodontal (gum) problems induced by the bad alignment of the teeth,
(2) Periodontal (gum) problems not related to teeth alignment.
In the first case the orthodontic treatment will fix -also- the gum problem, but in the second case, wearing the braces could aggravate the periodontal disease. It's hard for me to say which is your case without a clinical evaluation ... you should ask your dentist.

Good cleaning and maybe a Clorhexidine mouthwash |
If the gums are swollen only in the region where your teeth are badly positioned, than after the orthodontic treatment everything will be fine.
PS: after all you have told me I would guess that your periodontal problem is related only to the bad alignment of your teeth.
