I really like the idea of auctions as an opportunity for those with less FPs to earn certain items.
Although, I don't think those that already have enough FPs to buy the item through the shop should be able to participate. they could only win by raising to only one less than the original cost, and that's not fair.

That is a good point. Maybe for certain auctions only we can stipulate that members that are in possession with more than 'x' amount of FP cannot participate. I can program the script to check the amount of FP the user has before they bid. However, an auction is an auction, those coming, wether rich or poor have every right to bid, so in general it will be a free for all.
