Marla Singer

We first encounter this vixen (Helena Bonham Carter) when the Narrator is attending terminally ill support groups, and realizes that Marla is also 'playing the scene' so to speak. She apparently has no fear of anything, including death, as she walks in and out of traffic recklessly and consumes liquor and cigarettes on a daily basis. She meets the Narrator and starts a relationship with Tyler, who we learn in the end is the Narrator's split personality.
Marla progresses from nonchalance and anger to actually having feelings for Tyler/Narrator by the end of the movie. One wonders if her role has any significance in the progression of the story, but I believe it does, as she becomes part of a love 'triangle' so to speak. Tyler saves her from a suicide attempt and she becomes entangled and confused, as Tyler and the Narrator (the same person) have differing responses to her. What were your thoughts on this character?

Whenever a woman is in a movie of this nature, especially one that is attractive, we can be sure that there will be an aspect of love shown. Marla shows what each depressed person needs --> love, and despite the Narrator's deranged mind she seeks to find that 'love' in the Narrator / Tyler figure. However, 'Tyler' creeps in to spoil things and everyone has a limit. I believe Marla brings the one point of 'normalcy' to the movie, even though she is far from normal.

You're right, there is nothing normal about Marla, or for that matter, anyone in this movie. Yet the characters are believable. Marla is introduced as a hard, street-type character, who lives in the slums, and is void of emotion. Yet at the end of the movie she clearly has feelings for the Narrator, and we can assume that she has fallen in love with him as well. What is amusing is that she falls in love with a person who has a split personality and doesn't even know it. There is some irony in that fact; most notably "Which person did she fall in love with?"
