The Rythm Of Fireflies

Most of us do not realize that lowly fireflies congregate to communicate en masse, with untold thousands of individuals cooperating in huge synchronized light displays.

QUOTE
in far southwestern Indiana in which, from the ends of a long row of tall riverbank trees, synchronized flashes ...began moving toward each other, met at the middle, crossed and traveled to the ends, as when two pebbles are dropped simultaneously into the ends of a long narrow tank of water...

QUOTE
In 1961 Adamson described a still different type of display, the first from Africa: 'It is then too that one sees the great belt of light, some ten feet wide, formed by thousands upon thousands of fireflies whose green phosphorescence bridges the shoulder-high grass. The fluorescent band composed of these tiny organisms lights up and goes out with a precision that is perfectly synchronized, and one is left wondering what means of communication they possess which enables them to coordinate their shining as though controlled by a mechanical device.'

I couldn't find any pictures of the event, but you can imagine what a spectacle it is to watch prodigious lines of fireflies, performing rhythmic 'dances' with their lights of perfect timing. More amazing is the fact that it is coordinated with no single leader among the fireflies - it occurs spontaneously.

Fireflies Rythm The

I remember this past Summer when I would take my cabin out on a night hike and we would see hundreds of fireflies. It was so amazingly beautiful. I cannot imagine a more beautiful moment than standing amongst God's creations at some of its most amazing moments talking about how much He loves us. They would always congregate by one of the large trees, and it would be pitch black outside except for the stars in the sky and the fireflies.

Fireflies are not the only things in nature with uncanny coordination. Look at schools of fish and flocks of small birds, especially how every one turns at the same time in the same direction with no clear leader. Animals have some powerful, collective, communicative understanding that we don't comprehend. I wonder if they even know what they're doing, or if they just do it because it feels instinctually correct.

Yes, but I still think that the firefly example tops all others. Flocks of fish and birds show uncoordinated coordination, which is amazing by its own, but the fireflies also have rythm. They flash they're lights like a metronome, at a steady pace.

Just like the wind there must be some unseen element or material of some kind they are tuned into.

That being said, you don't want to be shining at the same time as the other firefly. If you are then the female you are trying to attract will be confused. You want to wait till the other guy is done showing off then show off yourself.

If you ever listen to frogs calling to each other, or crickets you can tell there is a definite rhythm. It all sounds like chaos but if you tune into it you notice that seldomly will two frogs next to each other croak at the same time.
