A Prophecy That Fullfils Itself

This is a phenomena that happens to me a lot! An example would be that, before a test, I say to myself - I'm going to fail the test. Thinking that way, I will all the test long be distracted, think of how bad I will do, etc. and - not fail - but get a worse score than if I would have if I would have told myself I will get an A.

Does it happen to you as well? Do you have any ways to get out of that cycle?

I try to use this effect to my advantage. Whenever I have pessimistic feelings, I try to minimize them and keep them vague. I actively visualize the positive result I desire. In the case of a test, I actually visualize walking into the classroom, feeling the sharpness of the pencils, reading the questions clearly and calmly, filling in the correct answers on the green answer sheet, etc. Positive visualization has definitely helped my academic life. I was so busy the last half of this past semester that I had almost no study time, and I did almost every major project on the day it was due. Regardless, I only received a B in one class, and the rest were As. I can justly ascribe much of that success to the blessings of God, but positive visualization has been an important part of my efforts.

A problem I have had was, when thinking 'Oh no, I am going to fail' in whatever it might be, I recognized it, and instead of minimizing the feeling, I said to myself 'Oh no, because I said I am going to fail I am indeed going to fail' which doesn't help at all.

Another is that I tried forcefully to think positively, which doesn't really work - at least for me. Just don't predict the outcome at all and that would be the best.

I had the same problems in high school. My success with positive thinking has only occurred in the past couple of years, since I earnestly began training myself to completely focus on one idea at a time. When I systematically remove negative distractions from my mind, I can visualize powerfully. Otherwise, my mental activity is similar to channel-surfing. I have to invest significant energy into actually believing my positive ideas, rather than allowing my critical nature to step in and encourage doubt. I also need to be alone - walking on campus is a good time to focus in this way, although my friends say I have tunnel vision because I don't see them while I'm concentrating on other matters. It really works, but only to the extent that I know the thing I desire and visualize is right.

Itself Fullfils Prophecy A

I have always found that I have to stop my own statements of never, and cant, and wont. In my case, statements like `I will never be able to save money` have a way to fulfill themselves by my bad spending habits. The only way I have to stop this cycle is to repeat positive statements over and over until the negative comment stops popping in your mind.

User Dawnofthenew, when quoting from other author's works such as in your case: 'As A Man Thinketh' by James Allen you must give the author credit or it is seen as plagiarism.

I always go by the motto that 'if you are prepared then you have nothing to fear'. Simply, if you have done your best to prepare for whatever you are about to take on then all the rest is just 'nervous excitement'. However, we must understand and acknowledge that if we do not prepare for something properly or at all then we have every right to not expect the results we are looking for and we can even follow-up with a behind kick if necessary to get us out of that 'lazy' position. I have always found that publicly informing others of our goals gives us the drive to accomplish them as we know others will hold us 'accountable' for attaining them.
