When I was learning Arabic one of my teachers was Syrian. She left because she sought a freer system and came to the US. She told us stories about teachers in Syria being dragged away for teaching something outside the dogma approved in their text books. Between that and being looked upon as a second class citizen for being a female she decided the US was a better fit for her.
