I much rather a desktop for the same reasons mentioned. I once had a laptop that I carried for two months to an appointment with a client and it developed moisture on the mother board and that was it - dead. I found living in humid areas is not good for laptops unless your location for use is constantly air conditioned and free of moisture of any sort.
I think I would rather have a laptop pc as opposed to a desktop because with the right sized paycheck you can get a laptop that can do even more than that of a desktop, example- mobile internet, makes it much more portable allows you to still do everything you wjold in your home, only you aren't in your home.
I do believe that if I were in a position to choose only one I would have to choose to have a laptop. This is simply because of frequent travel. I love the feel of a desktop while I am at home yet with the proper accessories such as a docking station, monitor, keyboard, and mouse a laptop can give nearly the same feel of comfort.
