The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is spending $300,000 to switch from silver to gold belt buckles and change other accessories on deputies' uniforms. Some question the cost. Ref. Source 9j.

That's a ridiculous amount of money just to change the color of a belt buckle. That could go towards hiring more police or why even spend it… put it to savings so you have a better budget next year.

While it seems like a huge amount but you have to look at how many belt buckles there are and what else they are changing. Sometimes it costs a bit and you do want some back ups in case of one getting damaged from time to time.

Yes, and they also probably get some kind of warranty with this and they pay for that as well. Yes, a warranty on a belt buckle seems like too much but this is often mandated by some arcane law.
