Here's a poem/song I wrote for Palm Sunday a few years ago. I was asked to write a song from the perspective of Jesus as he begins His descent into the city of Jerusalem in the final week of His life. Much of the song comes directly from passages in the Bible about the "Triumphal Entry" as it's now called. One of the things I was deeply moved by was how heartbroken Jesus was at the lack of belief of the people in the city, but the great resolve He had to continue with His mission. I wrote the poem from that perspective.
I've seen the Holy city
The great Jerusalem
From the Mount of Olives
Where the road I take begins
A vision of true beauty
This city on a hill
Now crowds await My coming
And prophecy fulfilled
Garments stretched before me
And branches in the air
"Hosanna Blessed is the Lord
The King of Israel"
I'll enter by the Golden Gate
While people loudly sing
A prophecy fulfilled today
At the entrance of the King
(Chorus)
So I'll come to you, My city, My bride
On a lowly beast of burden I'll ride
A sign of peace from a conquering King
For I'll conquer your hearts and salvation I'll bring
So down the winding path I come
And soon I will arrive
And even now I'd bring you peace
But I'm hidden from your eyes
So one day soon, I've seen it come
My Father's house will fall...
But I have come to tear the veil
And to pay the price for all
(Chorus 2)
So I'll come to you, My city, My bride
On a lowly beast of burden I'll ride
A sign of peace from a conquering King...
Oh Jerusalem! If you'd only believe
Wow! Great job. Very appropriate for the topic too. Applies today just as much as it would/did 2000+ years ago.
Yep, I write the music as well, although the term "write" is a bit of a misnomer since I'll rarely write anything down other than the lyrics and the basic chord structure. Once a song is in my head I seem to be able to remember it (lyrics, melody and chords) indefinetly. I guess it's one of my quirks.
You have allot of talent. I love the structure of your song and think it could probably be put into several different musical structures. Your words and phrases have allot of flexibility and are not limited to one form of writing. I hope that you plan on writing more, I would love to read more as I am a writer myself!
